ACR - Rank Order Calculator
Rank Order Calculator Overview
This program allows you to calculate the student rank orders for a subject, based on the results from a particular Objective.
Although it is most likely that rank orders will be calculated for all students within the entire year group who are studying a particular subject, it can also be run for individual subject classes.
In order to make this process work, you will need to know the 'Source Objective' that rank orders will be calculated on and the 'Target Objective' that the calculated rank orders will be saved into.
The program can be run multiple times. Any rank orders that already exist in the 'Target Objective' will be overwritten.
The calculation will award students who achieve the same result with the same rank order.
Example
Student | Result | Rank Order |
---|---|---|
Student 1 | 95 | 1 |
Student 2 | 92 | 2 |
Student 3 | 92 | 3 |
Student 4 | 87 | 4 |
Student 5 | 84 | 5 |
If the 'Source Objective' does not contain a numeric grading scale, it will rely on a result conversion (Analytics Mapping) being set up in program Student Admin > Academic Reporting > Setup Information > Reporting Setup on the 'Assessment Methods' tab.
Example
A+ to E- (15 point scale) 'Calculation Rule'.
Student Grade | Numeric value |
---|---|
A+ | 15 |
A | 14 |
A- | 13 |
B+ | 12 |
B | 11 |
B- | 10 |
C+ | 9 |
C | 8 |
C- | 7 |
D+ | 6 |
D | 5 |
D- | 4 |
E+ | 3 |
E | 2 |
E- | 1 |
General Tab
Fields that require further clarification | |
---|---|
Result Period | Select the 'Result Period' for which rank orders will be calculated. This is a mandatory selection field. |
Year Group | This field is only displayed if your school runs a non-unitised or horizontal timetable. Select the 'Year Group' for which rank orders will be calculated. This is a mandatory selection field. |
Subject | If your school runs a non-unitised or horizontal timetable, use this field to calculate rank orders for a single subject only. If you don't want to restrict the calculation of rank orders to a single subject, leave this blank. If your school runs a unitised or vertical timetable, use this field to calculate rank orders for a single subject. It is a mandatory selection field. |
Class | Use this field to calculate rank orders for a single subject class only. If you don't want to restrict the calculation of rank orders to a single subject class, leave this blank. |
Source Objective Code | Select the Objective to base the rank order calculations on. This is a mandatory selection field. |
Target Objective Code | Select the Objective that will be used to record the calculated rank order. This is a mandatory selection field. This Objective should have a numeric range that caters for the maximum number of students within a cohort, e.g. If you have 240 students studying English within a year level then use a numeric range of 0–300. |
Include Non-Current Students | By default, the calculation program will include students who are not current but have results in the 'Source Objective' at the time of performing the calculation. Untick this checkbox to exclude students who have left the school but have results in the 'Source Objective' at the time of performing the calculation. |
Click the 'GO' button and the program will display a list with the students for whom it was able to successfully calculate a Rank Order.
It will also highlight the following errors:
Students who don't have a result for the 'Source' Objective.
The 'Source' Objective is not set up for a subject.
The 'Target' Objective is not set up for a subject.
The 'Source' Objective does not use a numeric scale or have a valid mapped analytic translation.
The 'Target' Objective is incorrectly set up with a non-numeric assessment method.
The numeric range for the 'Target' Objective is too small for the number of rank orders calculated.
Review these carefully and determine if the error is valid or setups need to be modified.
These errors should be resolved and the calculator run again if required.
