TASS Release Cycle

Publish DateJune 2022

What is the TASS release cycle?

TASS typically delivers 2 major releases each year, with smaller patch updates in between for smaller enhancements and fixes.

The frequency of our updates is now changing to smaller and more regular releases, each of which could contain a mix of major enhancements, minor enhancements, fixes and other updates.

Why have we changed our release cycle?

The new release cycle allows us to get new features and enhancements to customers faster.

With the previous bi-annual major release structure, development could finish several months before being released in the next major version, meaning schools had to wait longer for key updates.

The new release cycle will bring these updates forward for release across the entire year, as soon as they're tested and approved.

What is the new naming convention?

From version 57 onwards, we will be using a simplified naming convention that aligns to the month of each release.

For example, V57.6 is being released in June, v57.7 will be released in July, and v57.8 in August (and so on).

In January 2023, your school's TASS version will roll over to v58.1 and continue from there.

How will this change affect schools?

The process of updating your school's TASS instance will not change.

However, schools should keep an eye out for the major features and enhancements as they become available in more regular updates.

What is a Feature Flag?

You may notice in the TASS Release Notes that some items have been marked with "This item will be behind a feature flag."

Feature flags allow us to package smaller chunks of our larger, long-term projects into ongoing releases. TASS can then switch on individual features early for specific customers who help us with user acceptance testing and feedback.

What is a 'Friendly School' and a 'Friendly Release'?

A 'Friendly Release' is early access to a new version of the TASS software.

A 'Friendly School' is a customer who takes this early access version and also agrees to provide user acceptance testing and feedback on specific features hidden behind a 'Feature Flag', prior to General Release.

If your school would like to join Friendly Releases, you can register using the form below:
